Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.

Their individual and collected perceptions of things beautiful, both aesthetically and physically, academically and morally–to some extent–are held close and expressed with convincing conviction. Its the vivacity of these characters that Zadie Smith brings to On Beauty and lends to the books much-deserved attention.
