SkittleS Crispy treats
AN Irish motorist has been jailed for four years after he mowed down a group of holidaymakers “like skittles” following a bust-up with them. Two people - a woman and a child - were lucky to escape alive and were seriously hurt when they were thrown into the air. Another young girl escaped with bruising when her push chair was pushed down the pavement in Towyn near Rhyl in Wales. Jobless baker Anthony McLaughlin, 46, originally from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, sped off after deliberately mounted a pavement in his car without any lights on, the court heard.

(Taboo Records) The renowned RB/jazz singer Angela Bofill interprets a version of the Benny More bolero Cómo Fué beautifully done in Spanish. The singer draws here from her own Puerto Rican-Cuban roots to embrace and deliver it with a special RB nuance, and Mark Levine adds his piano to the piece. Santana conguero Raul Rekow appears on the Armando Peraza tune Red Onions, as local talents such as Dimitri Methany (flugelhorn), Rubén Salcido (sax/flute) help to round out the Safari sound. Particularly impressive are selections from the self-titled 1974 album by José Chepito Areas on Columbia. Guarafeo is a guajira groove with spirited lead vocals by Norma Arias. Buscando La Gente, a jam co-written by Chepito with Bay Area Latin music pioneer Carlos Federico, reveals a driving 6/8 section and awesome percussion breaks. Eric Bermen delivers a solid piano solo on the tune and provide mean montunos throughout the album. Props to guitarist Eddy Ramírez for the Santana touch.
Bank holiday revellers are invited to take a safari with a difference this weekend. The seaside safaris have been organised by The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership and involve learning more about the fascinating marine life of the North East. The Northumberland coast covers 135sq km, and is well known for its sweeping sandy beaches and open views. With all this to explore, the first seaside safari takes place at Bamburgh on Bank Holiday Saturday with the second at Alnmouth on the Sunday.

Sterling Ruby, Marc Foxx, Los Angeles Sterling Ruby is a cool name, a drag queen name, a British spys name. I dont know him, and hadnt heard of him before I saw his show at Marc Foxx. That doesnt matter because his show, Interior Designer, which looks at sexuality, namely transgendered people, and flirts with theoretical schizophrenia, requires only sympathy for his observations and the art he makes. Four delicately scratched and key carved Formica laminate monoliths, each 7 x 4 x 4 are at the center of Interior Designer. Their tinted surface has dirty spots, handprints, chips, and evidence of handling. They recall the laminate prefabs in the displays and dressing rooms found in department stores. In their material and dimension they suggest–and maybe desire to be–video booth jack off chambers.
Literally and symbolically, Interior Designs is about interior and exterior designs. Its form parallels its content: it is divided into four major sections, each with approximately twenty chapters of between one and four pages. Instead of relying on plot, Jaffe writes short passages to illustrate various aspects of design, primarily the architecture of houses. In these passages the narrator describes all the houses she has lived in, none of which she has occupied for more than three years. In the section entitled The First House, the narrator and her husband, a rabbi, look for a new house. Instead of finding the right house, the right house seems to find them (throughout the novel structural components such as doors and windows are personified). The new house also has light shining from more than one direction, an entry for proper greetings and farewells, and a sense of solidity, all of which make the narrator feel infinite. Upon moving to the house, the narrator considers philosophical questions concerning fate, luck, guilt, and desire. These questions are exemplary of the novels themes–in every chapter of the novel, some aspect of exterior design is portrayed literally to illustrate metaphorically human emotions or philosophical issues. Sometimes the metaphors are a bit too obvious, and occasionally the narrator intrudes to explain them lest they slip past readers. For example, when looking at a house she decides against, she says all except one structural flaw is amendable. The minor flaws in the house are like little and medium-sized mistakes we all make in life–they were not irrevocable. For the most part, however, Jaffe has a wonderfully poetic style; remarkably enough, despite the lack of plot, the novel moves forward at a quick pace. The idea that you cant go home again recurs throughout the novel, but the implication is interestingly reversed, suggesting that to return to an earlier phase in ones fife would be to backslide. Textual and symbolic circular patterns develop in the novel that integrate the chapters with the text as a whole and that unite individuals with others and in a spiritual sense with the universe. Entertaining, witty, and full of philosophical insights, Interior Designs explores ways to find and maintain personal and spiritual peace.

Dictionaries define a safari as an overland journey or hunting expedition in Africa. The word safari is derived from the Arabic, safara, meaning `to travel. But how have safaris developed since the days depicted in old sepia photographs of men in pith helmets standing, rifle in hand, framed by the massive tusks of the elephant they have shot — tusks the like of which we will never see again? Safaris have always been and remain a romance with the wild. For the vast majority of people today, the motivation is to venture into unspoilt wilderness and experience nature up close, following the conservationists creed of `taking only photographs and leaving only footprints, rather than trophy hunting. Here we set out to consider the main options for photographic safaris. The picture is not comprehensive. Rwandas Parc de lAkagera for example, would rival any reserve in Africa for its beauty and the rich diversity of its wildlife, but it lies far off the beaten track and so is accessible to only the most determined travellers. Cameroon, Zaire, Malawi, Mozambique and Ethiopia similarly have fantastic opportunities for viewing wildlife but they too are outside the mainstream.
This year, the Great Circle Air Safari hopes to raise enough funds for the RFDS to purchase replacement aircraft ($8 million each, funded by the Australian community). It also wants to publicize on the “mantle of safety” that the RFDS provides for people who travel in regional and remote Australia.-Chris Fletcher

On June 21, law enforcement personnel from around the nation gathered at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson to discuss a hot topic - heavy equipment theft. Sponsored by FBI-LEEDA and the National Equipment Register (NER), the summit drew personnel from 45-50 law enforcement agencies from as far away as Denver who wanted to learn more about the growing problem of heavy equipment theft and how to fight it. Joey Gonce is director of the agriculture and livestock theft bureau at the Mississippi Department of Agriculture (MDAC). His main focus at the MDAC is agriculture theft, but he has fielded calls from construction companies that are missing equipment, and as a retired highway patrolman, hes seen it all.

The Capital Goods industry has three sub industries: electrical equipment, heavy equipment and machinery manufacturers. The three capital goods market segments have similar valuations even though their end products are different Another factor effecting the valuation of heavy equipment and capital goods companies is interest cost The current rate of interest is favorable for this group. Also, long term interest rates are relativly low which makes it easier for corporations and farmers to finance heavy equipment expenditures. Companies, in the heavy equipment industry, that obtain a significant amount of their sales in foreign markets usually have a higher growth rate and therefore a higher valuation. The reason is, there is a worldwide built up demand for infrastructure improvements. Therefore companies doing business in the international market have a good source for long term profits.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — The parks popular west entrance is opening to snowmobiles and snowcoaches for the first time this winter, although some routes remain closed due to a lack of snow, park officials said Friday. The West Yellowstone, Mont., entrance is scheduled to open Saturday, park spokeswoman Cheryl Matthews said. Snowmobiles and snowcoaches will be allowed on roads between the west entrance and Old Faithful, Madison to Norris and Norris to Canyon. The road from Mammoth to Norris continues to have bare spots and will remain closed to snowmobiles, although snowcoaches are allowed, Matthews said.
In 2004, the EMS team identified its first large-scale initiative–solid waste management. Some of the guidelines introduced include: * Recycling opportunities for visitors. There are currently 63 recycling bins in the park, and it is estimated that there has been a 50 percent increase in the amount of commodities collected in the park, particularly plastics. * Recycling propane cylinders. Through a partnership with Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone and Grand Teton concessionaires, the Yellowstone Park Foundation and various private entities, there is now a program of collecting and recycling propane cylinders in the greater Yellowstone area. The Propane Bottle Recycler (PBR), a mobile propane recycling unit, is now being used to recycle the estimated 3,000, one-pound propane cylinders discarded in the park each year.

Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgeryAlthough these three types of surgery share some common techniques and approaches, they have somewhat different emphases. Plastic surgery is usually performed to treat birth defects and to remove skin blemishes such as warts, acne scars, or birthmarks. Cosmetic surgery procedures are performed to make persons look younger or enhance their appearance in other ways. Reconstructive surgery is used to reattach body parts severed in combat or accidents, to perform skin grafts after severe burns, or to reconstruct parts of persons body that were missing at birth or removed by surgery. Reconstructive surgery is the oldest form of plastic surgery, having developed out of the need to treat wounded soldiers in wartime.

Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.
Q: I was involved in a car accident last night. I havent been to the doctor, although my neck is still very stiff I dont want to go to a solicitor. Can I sue for personal injury on my own? A: You can act for yourself in a personal injury action for less than L1000 in value. However, you must produce medical evidence to prove your case, so it is imperative you go to your GP immediately. You could also act for yourself if the injury was less than 1000 but it would not be treated as a small claim. Solicitors costs would be recoverable if you lost.
Over 1,700 cases have been lodged this month alone - which is twice the number that was lodged in the same 21- day period last year.

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2002;187(3), Part 2, focuses on how and why womens health and gender-based competencies should be woven into the fabric of undergraduate medical education. It discusses appropriate components of the health and medical curriculum, and combining health care competencies with educational objectives and models for teaching reproductive health.

epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.
* On Beauty by Zadie Smith The Penguin Press, September 2005 $25.95, ISBN 1-594-20063-7 The members of both the Belsey and Kipps families are stalwart theorists. Their individual and collected perceptions of things beautiful, both aesthetically and physically, academically and morally–to some extent–are held close and expressed with convincing conviction. Its the vivacity of these characters that Zadie Smith brings to On Beauty and lends to the books much-deserved attention.
We are at the Bargello in Florence, and she says, What are you thinking? and I say, Beauty, thinking of how very far we are now from the machine shop and the dry fields of Kansas, the treeless horizons of slate skies and the muted passions of roughnecks and scrabble farmers drunk and romantic enough to weep more or less silently at the darkened end of the bar out of, what else, loneliness, meaning the ache of thwarted desire, of, in a word, beauty, or rather its absence, and it occurs to me again that no male member of my family has ever used this word in my hearing or anyone elses except in reference, perhaps, to a new pickup or dead deer. By God, Henry, thats a beauty. This insight, this backward vision, first came to me as a young man, a boy really, as some weirdness of the airwaves slipped through the static of our new Motorola with a discussion of beauty between Robert Penn Warren and Paul Weiss at Yale College. We were in Kansas eating barbecue-flavored potato chips and waiting for Father Knows Best to float up through the snow of rural TV in 1963. I felt transported, stunned. Here were two grown men discussing beauty seriously and with dignity as if they and the topic were as normal as normal topics of discussion between men, such as soybean prices or why the commodities market was a suckers game or Oklahoma football or Gimpy Neiderland almost dying from his hemorrhoid operation. They were discussing beauty and tossing around allusions to Plato and Aristotle and someone named Pater, and they might be homosexuals. That would be a natural conclusion, of course, since here were two grown men talking about beauty instead of scratching their crotches and cursing the goddamned government trying to run everybodys business. Not a beautiful thing, that. The government. Not beautiful, though a man would not use that word. One time my Uncle Ross from California called my moms Sunday dinner centerpiece lovely, and my father left the room, clearly troubled by the word lovely, coupled probably with the very idea of California and the fact that my Uncle Ross liked to tap-dance. The light from the venetian blinds, the autumn, silver Kansas light laving the table that Sunday, is what I recall now because it was beautiful, though I of course would not have said so then, beautiful, as so many moments forgotten but later remembered come back to us in slants and pools and uprisings of light, beautiful in itself, but more beautiful mingled with memory, the light leaning across my mothers carefully set table, across the empty chair beside my Uncle Ross, the light filtering down from the green plastic slats in the roof of the machine shop where I worked with my father so many afternoons, standing or crouched in pools of light and sweat with men who knew the true meaning of labor and money and other hard, true things and did not, did not ever, use the word beauty.Late November, shadows gather in the shops north end, and Im watching Bobby Sudduth do piecework on the Hobbs. He fouls another cut, Motherfucker, fucking bitch machine, and starts over, sloppy, slow, about two joints away from being fired, but he just doesnt give a shit. He sets the bit again, white wrists flashing in the lamplight and showing botched, blurred tattoos, both from a night in Tijuana, and continues his sexual autobiography, Thats right, fucked my own sister, and Ill tell you, bud, it wasnt bad. Later, in the Philippines, the clap: As far as Im concerned, any man who hasnt had V.D. just isnt a man. I walk away, knowing I have just heard the dumbest remark ever uttered by man or animal. The air around me hums in a dark, metallic bass, light spilling like grails of milk as someone opens the mammoth shop door. A shrill, sullen truculence blows in like dust devils, the hot wind nagging my blousy overalls, and in the side yard the winch truck backfires and stalls. The sky yellows. Barn sparrows cry in the rafters. That afternoon in Dallas, Kennedy is shot.

Early Cameras Have you ever looked at a photograph and wondered how it was made? The ancient Greeks were able to produce images in darkened rooms. They let light enter the room through a small hole in one wall. The image appeared upside down on the opposite wall. This was called a camera obscura. Artists used these images to make sketches. The word photography comes from the Greek words meaning to write or draw with light.

In raw numbers, the Hottubbists constitute one of the smallest religions in the world: With well under 100 practitioners, it is dwarfed even by Rastafarianism and Scientology. The group is interesting for many reasons, but its social influence is not among them. Though small and obscure, it is an example of a significant social trend: the blurring boundaries between art and faith. Atheists have long regarded religion as, at best, a collective work of art, but in the last century that view has grown popular with churchgoers as well. Many Christians and Jews today will declare that the Bible is a collection of myths and metaphors, not literal truths, and some will aver that there is more than one path to God. Neopagans and others take this nonliteral and eclectic approach and run with it, freely fusing classical mythologies, tribal spiritual practices, and even popular fiction, all of which would be mutually exclusive if they were regarded as, to borrow a phrase, the Gospel truth. At the far end of the spectrum are those w ho do not merely regard religion as a human creation but actively identify themselves as its creators. The Hot Tub group actually began as an art project, becoming a more spiritual endeavor only gradually. If it is unusual, it is only because it is so radical. Most people do not feel the need to be the authors of their own religions, though quite a few are happy to be the editors. Whether this is bad or good depends on your attitude toward orthodoxy. Traditionalists often castigate what they call the spiritual cafeteria, in which ordinary worshippers pick and choose the beliefs and practices that appeal to them, customizing their faiths to fit their lifestyles instead of altering their lives to fit the dictates of their denominations. The cafeteria line includes every Catholic who casually dissents from the edicts of Rome, every otherwise observant Jew who eats food made in nonkosher kitchens, every Muslim who adjusts his prayer schedule to his workday rather than the other way around. Sometimes, these pickers and choosers even mix in their favorite features of other faiths.

Personal Injuries follows The Laws of Our Fathers, which Turow completed in 1996. His latest novel is set in the fictional Kindle County, which has much of the atmosphere and many attributes of Chicago, the city in which Turow and his wife practice law. The IRS has located a bank account into which large amounts of money have been deposited by those associated with a small law firm. The account appears to be a device to hide income, and the IRS immediately puts the pressure on Robbie Feaver, one of the two partners in the firm. The real problem for Feaver began when the IRS agents opened his front door to let in U.S. Attorney Stan Sennett, who had an entirely different goal than tax recovery on his mind. That is when George Mason got involved. Mason was an attorney who had an office in the same building where Feavers firm had its offices. Mason becomes the voice of the novel as Feavers attorney for the defense of the tax fraud charges. The story is told largely from his point of view as he attempts to help Feaver through what becomes a complicated hodgepodge of personal relationships, schemes, double-dealing, subterfuge and, ultimately, death. It seems the U.S. Attorney is interested in leveraging the potential tax charges against Feaver to force Feavers cooperation in a sting operation. The target of the sting is Feavers law partners uncle, the chief judge of the local court. U.S. Attorney Sennett believes there is widespread corruption in the courts. Feaver confirms that he has been involved in a system by which he can influence the outcome of cases favorably. The system involves giving money to various people who work for different judges, and the belief is that some of the money in each case makes its way to the chief judge.
Taxation of Personal Injury Awards Recent legislation, as part of the Revenue Reconciliation Act of 1989, may have settled some of the other areas of disagreement. The legislation provides that the exclusion for personal injury awards does not apply to any punitive damages in connection with a case not involving physical injury or physical sickness.(1) Thus, it would appear that all damages, both compensatory and punitive received for physical injuries will be excluded from gross income. Only compensatory damages received for non-physical injuries will be excludable from gross income. Punitive damages received for non-physical injuries will be taxable. The new provision is effective for amounts received after July 10, 1989, in tax years ending after that date, unless a binding agreement, decree or award is in effect before then. Despite the clarifying legislation, areas for disagreement between taxpayers and the IRS still exist regarding the nature of non-physical injury awards involving libel or defamation of character. Lets examine the statutory provisions, administrative pronouncements and judicial interpretations affecting the taxation of awards for libel or defamation of character.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

Their individual and collected perceptions of things beautiful, both aesthetically and physically, academically and morally–to some extent–are held close and expressed with convincing conviction. Its the vivacity of these characters that Zadie Smith brings to On Beauty and lends to the books much-deserved attention.

In a career that has spanned nearly two decades, The Beautiful South may possibly have earned the right to lie back and go stale.

Here is the typical American garage: bicycles leaning against the walls, garden tools ready to trip the unwary, sports equipment piled helter-skelter, woodwork tools mounded in corners, inherited furniture piled to the ceiling, oil stains covering the floor. Then theres Mike Sabos garage, a $10,000 room so handsome its hard to call it a garage. Its better organized and cleaner than most kitchens, and people notice. Sabo is on the leading edge of the latest trend in home improvement — the tofor garage. According to the National Association of Home Builders, garage remodeling is a $2.5 billion-a- year business and is growing quickly.

Over 1 million women in the United States have breast implants. Breast cancer screening by mammography and physical examination is technically complicated in these patients, thereby raising the risk of late detection of a common malignancy. Mann describes physical examination and mammography techniques tailored to women with breast implants.Physical examination techniques should also be modified to displace the implant and ensure access to all natural breast tissue. In addition to conventional thorough examination in both the upright and supine positions, an additional examination is recommended in which one hand displaces the implant to facilitate access to an underlying wedge of breast tissue. This process is repeated until all natural breast tissue has been palpated. Finally, the integrity of the breast implants should be assessed. Changes in size, shape or compressibility may indicate an implant rupture.
An estimated 264,000 women opted to increase their breast size with breast implants in 2004, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a form of cosmetic surgery known as breast augmentation. Additionally, another 75,800 women had their breasts surgically lifted, a procedure known as a mastopexy. On the opposite end of the spectrum is breast reduction. This procedure, which may be considered a cosmetic surgical procedure, is often performed to relieve significant health and emotional problems resulting from overly large and/or heavy breasts. In 2004, the Society notes, 105,500 breast reductions were performed, a 25 percent increase over 2000. Whether you choose to have your breasts increased, lifted or reduced, its important that you understand not only the benefits of the procedures, but the risks, costs (health insurance rarely pays unless there is some medically necessary reason for the surgery), and various surgical options available to you.

It is almost worthwhile getting “whiplash” preprinted on a claim form to save time Turning first to the real increase, the recently published report by the governments Statistical Service on Road Accidents in Great Britain in 1996 provides a clue. Injuries in 1996 totalled 317,000, which was an increase on the 307,000 in 1995. Fatalities, however, fell slightly to 3,598 from 3,621. Both figures had been generally falling since the mid 60s, when they peaked at just under 8,000 fatalities and just under 400,000 injuries. This has doubtless arisen for a whole number of reasons, including compulsory seat belts and crash helmets, drink drive regulations, air bags, better car design, and many others. To achieve this reduction over that period was particularly remarkable, because the vehicle population in the mid 60s was 13 million compared with slightly over 26 million now. Most of this increase in vehicle population can be found on the M25 each morning and evening!

Modern pest control is often termed IPM–which can be defined as a coordination of several management functions to: * Resolve these infestations with short-term control(s). * Reduce or eliminate the causes of infestation with long-term resolutions.
Pocket gophers are fossorial (burrowing) rodents–so named because they have fur-lined pouches outside the mouth, one on each side of the face. These pockets, which are capable of being fumed inside out, are used for carrying food. Pocket gophers are powerfully built in the forequarters and have a short neck; the head is fairly small and flattened. The forepaws are large-clawed and the lips close behind large incisors. This feature allows them to use their incisors for digging without getting a mouthful of dirt, a unique feature to gophers. There are over 30 species of pocket gophers in the Western Hemisphere. Pocket gophers vary in size from 5 1/2 inches in length to over 13 inches in length. Litter sizes vary from one to 10 but typically average three to four. In the northern part of their range they have one litter per year, as opposed to up to two in the southern ranges. Young gophers are dispersed above ground and are capable of swimming as well on the search for suitable habitat to begin new burrow systems. Pocket gophers feed in three ways: they feed on roots, above-ground vegetation, and they pull vegetation into their tunnel to be stored in food caches for later consumption. In the vineyard, pocket gophers girdle vines, damage roots systems (most often in new plantings), and cause multiple-irrigation problems by promoting erosion and damaging drip lines. They are solitary little beasts, vigorously maintaining and defending their tunnel system. Depending on the species and available habitat, gopher population density may vary from six to eight per acre, to up to 62 per acre. Gophers do not hibernate and only cohabitate during the breeding season The burrowing activity of one gopher produces up to 70 mounds in one month. So how do you control such an active but solitary rodent? The fact that a gopher is solitary works to your advantage. You have three basic pest management tools for gopher control: Biological control, chemical control and trapping.

Breast Augmentation The majority of breast augmentations are performed using breast implants, silicone spheres filled with saline or sterile salt water, or, more recently, silicone. Silicone-filled implants are thought to provide a more natural appearance and are less likely to deflate than saline implants. One advantage to saline implants, however, is that some implants allow the size to be adjusted after surgery by adding solution up to six months after the surgery.

In the populous state of California, DCs have taken a huge hit in workers compensation claims. Meanwhile, other states are rearranging their personal injury laws. I thought this subject matter would make for a nice “interview.” The following is what I would say if asked for my thoughts on the current state of affairs in personal injury trends and what the future holds for chiropractic practitioners. A: I think that in order to understand the big picture, you need to parse out the contributions of the major players in this business, if I can call it that. The players are the insurers, the lawyers, the doctors, the various experts sometimes relied upon during the litigation process, the government and, most importantly, the victims of trauma. Q: Lets start with insurers - what are their contributions to the current personal injury environment?

After seeing the picture on page 75 of the October 2005 issue, I beg the question, What on Earth were you thinking?! publishing such a spectacle for the world to see. The photo of target practice to end the life of a defenseless and otherwise benign beast sends all the wrong messages about guns and those who own and use them. I was particularly dismayed because it gives gun owners and users the reputation as senseless takers of life for no other reason but for target practice. Shame on the ones using their weapons this way!

Pest controllers locate, identify, repel, and destroy pests. They use their knowledge of pests habits, along with an arsenal of pest management techniques-applying chemicals, setting traps, operating equipment, and even modifying building structures-to alleviate pest problems. The best known method of pest control is pesticide application. Pest controllers apply two different types of pesticides: common use and restricted use. Common use pesticides are the most widely used and are readily available; in diluted concentrations, they are available to the public. Restricted use pesticides are available only to professionals for the most severe infestations. Their application is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of their potential harm to pest controllers, customers, and the environment.
Rodent control is taking some interesting and not so encouraging turns. There is an initiative that will be introduced in California on the November 1998 ballot (assuming it gets the 500,000 signatures needed, which is a slam dunk in California). It is called an Initiative to Ban Cruel Traps. This initiative, in a nutshell, will make it illegal to use a body gripping trap. one that grips the mammals body or body part, including, but not limited to, steel-jawed leghold traps, padded-jaw leghold traps, Conibear traps, and snares. This initiative also states that, it is illegal for any person, including employees of the federal, state, county or municipal government, to use or authorize the use of any steel-jawed leghold trap, padded or otherwise, to capture any game mammal, fur-bearing mammal, non-game mammal, protected mammal, or any dog or cat. Now, stop and reread that paragraph and think about it for a minute. This initiative decides for us that we cant control agricultural fur-bearing pests any longer. For that matter, it specifically states that you cant trap anything that has fur on it for any reason, and that the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, State Department of Fish Game and your local county ag commissioner or county trapper cant do it either. It does make provision for the protection of human health and safety (pretty considerate - you know how vicious those gopher and mole attacks on children have been lately), and it will allow you to use mouse traps in your basement. Oh, and by the way, it introduces two chemicals that can no longer by used - Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide. What are these used for? Well, its not rodent control. The state has been experimenting with these two chemicals for coyote control. They make a collar to put around a lambs neck. If the animal is unfortunate enough to be a victim of a coyote attack and the coyote punctures the collar its lights out for the sheep killer. The point here is precedent - get these two and then work your way on to household chemicals for insect and rodent control and sweep everything up in between.Since this is not a political editorial, all I can say is watch out for this one. Agriculture will lose big time, so tell a friend and lets make sure that we dont get tied down by bad law written by extremists. If you want a copy of this initiative yourself, again, hit me on the e-mail, and Ill send you a copy. You can read it yourself and decide on your own. I think it is very important that we dont make our decision based on whats on TV. Hollywood is anti-trapping and they have a lot of money to spend to support their position. If you want a recent case history lesson you may look at the fine State of Colorado, which had a similar initiative pass last year by a 51% margin. After the smoke cleared, it was disclosed that Hollywood spent just a little over a quarter million dollars to promote the initiative. All the local state and county representatives, combined with the agriculture and fur trapping industries, could muster was $48,000, and they lost.
Happily, there exists a simple, less dramatic and more effective system of pest control, called Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, which employs least-toxic strategies. IPM has three parts: sanitation, exclusion, and baits, says Bill Quarles of the Biointegrated Resource Center (BIRC) in Berkeley, California. Here are some tips from BIRC and the book Tiny Game Hunting to help you manage (i.e., destroy) the uninvited: * They come looking for food and water. Never leave food out. Wash dishes promptly, keep surfaces clean, put garbage in pails with snug-fitting lids and take it out often. When you do not give pests anything to eat, it forces them to eat the baits, Quarles says. Wipe up moisture and fix any leaks. * Exclude pests by sealing cracks and crevices, especially around pipes and radiators and between counters, baseboards, and walls, with steel wool (mice cant chew through) or a low- or no-VOC caulk, which wont release toxic volatile organic compounds into your air. Put out sticky traps so that you know where roaches are–how they get in, where they are living, Quarles advises. To kill roaches, treat crevices with boric acid (see below) before caulking.

Pills purported to augment womens breasts are not only unproven but may be dangerous, according to a Nov 17, 2004, news release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. More than 30 herbal products that allegedly increase the size of womens breasts have been advertised on television, in magazines, and on the Internet, but there have been no scientifically sound clinical trials proving that they work.
Historically, the augmented breast has presented problems for both mammography and ultrasound imaging because of the superimposition of lesions and glandular tissue. (1) Radiographically dense breasts also can present a diagnostic imaging challenge for the early detection of breast carcinoma because of the following factors (2): * Fibroglandular tissue obscures cancer because both have similar attenuation properties. * Dense breasts produce more scatter radiation, decreasing image contrast.

In a personal injury action, defendant sought a partial summary judgment in Fellenz v. Luedtke Engineering Co. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman denied the motion due to the fact that New York case law is not clear on applying Labor Law Section 241(6) to the type of work plaintiff was doing, nor is it clear that the observable danger would absolve defendant from liability under Section 200 of the Labor Law.Plaintiff Fellenz was employed by the Army Corps as the projects construction inspector and representative. His duties included observing the progress of the work, insuring that the break wall construction met specifications, completing quality assurance reports and plotting drawings. Fellenz was present on the construction site daily from June 1996 through May 1997.

In 2004, an estimated 105,500 breast reductions were performed, a 25 percent increase over 2000. The procedure is often performed to relieve significant health and emotional problems resulting from overly large and/or heavy breasts, including neck and back pain, shoulder pain, chafing or rash, significant limitation of activities, unhappiness with appearance, chronic headaches and nerve damage. Psychological issues include depression and stigmatization, poor self-esteem and anxiety, and problems finding clothing that fits. Whether you choose to have your breasts increased, lifted or reduced, its important that you understand not only the benefits of the procedures, but also the risks, costs (health insurance rarely pays unless there is some medically necessary reason for the surgery), and various surgical options available, and that you choose the right physician. Your surgeon should be board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, have privileges at a local hospital, and be trained in the technique youve chosen. Most women opting for breast surgery are young and healthy; however, a full medical evaluation is still required. For instance, if you smoke or are overweight, your health care professional may counsel you to quit smoking and/or lose weight, both of which reduce the risk of complications from surgery.

When you are involved in a car accident, there are a number of things you should know, but unfortunately, this information is not readily available. This article discusses what you need to know about personal injury claims long before you even think about hiring a lawyer. If you are injured in a car accident, and the accident was not your fault, you have the right to sue the owner and driver of the other vehicle for damages. These damages are paid to you by the other drivers insurance company. Tort law does not compensate the other driver for any injury he or she may have suffered as a result of causing the car accident. However, separate from tort law, all automobile insurance policies sold in Alberta provide for me payment of accident and disability benefits. Unlike tort law, both you and the driver of the other vehicle are entitled to receive the same accident and disability benefits.
To achieve this reduction over that period was particularly remarkable, because the vehicle population in the mid 60s was 13 million compared with slightly over 26 million now. Most of this increase in vehicle population can be found on the M25 each morning and evening!
